Dixon Homes Cycling Team

Rider Diary, Kyle Marwood, 25th April 2008

The transition for being based in Victoria to Mackay, Queensland and into Dixon Homes cycling team has been a great experience.  I have come off a good track season.   Performing well at Victorian Titles, just missing out on National section and riding some big events like the Bendigo International Madison.  I have come into the team wanting a good season of racing, with no particular goals in mind other than a consistent season of racing and training.  With hopefully some good individual and team results on the way.

We are very early in the road season at the moment and we have already shown some promise with good solid results at club level and at the North Queensland games.  I’m looking forward to the up and coming Tour De Tablelands in Cairns; it will be a good challenge and give the team a good idea of where we are at.

I have been lucky enough to get a job working the bike store with Evan and Ryan Corry.  So work is flexible enough to fit in a good 20-30 hours of training a week.  Training in Mackay provides it advantages, being able to train in the early morning with only a short sleeve jersey and shorts is a novelty for me.  In Bendigo, where I come from it is not uncommon for the mornings to be below zero with plenty of frosts.

So the season is early with plenty to look forward to.

Dixon Homes Cycling Team

Rider Diary, Evan Corry Sunday 13th April

First road trip away for the Dixon Homes cycling team with a trip to Townsville for the North Queensland Games. We kicked the weekend off with the Rocky boys stopping in at Corry Cycles for a final fit out on the new Karbonas, after checking out the new bling the bikes were loaded we headed up the road. The Ignis led the way on the Bruce highway with others trying but failing to match the horsepower delivered by the 4kilowatt engine (in aero position with rear-view mirrors folded back).

Early Saturday morning for some heading out to light up the time trial, while others managed what was supposed to be an easy coffee shop ride, until Jay Calligan decided to test the new Karbonas stopping power on the bitumen (in front of the locals including a bloke in an Akubra) The Time Trialers done us proud producing a first in all categories contested.

The road race was always going to be a tough day with a climb only 4km in, With Chris Roche up the Road early Evan Corry and Kyle Marwood managed to bridge the gap on the climb with Marwood luggin his 90kg frame up the hill at impressive speed, It was a case of driving to the finish for Myself and Kyle, while the others controlled the bunch. To cross the line with Kyle in toe with a 3minute plus lead was a great feeling, its good to achieve something as a team and see our hard work start to pay off.

The Crit was always going to be a different story with the locals looking for revenge on the flat tight circuit. But with some early breaks from the Dixon Homes team pulled back in, it wasn’t long until the right mix formed out front with the Victorian Horse Kyle Marwood, Adam Cashman and Chris Roche and one local driving the pace, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and all sprint primes, made for another good day out for the team.

On a personal note, achieving racing results is only a small part of what the Dixon Homes Cycling Team has achieved to date. To see Queensland cyclist approach racing professionally and watch friends race as one unit is awesome to say the least. To achieve the results we have on our debut is an even better achievement! We were unknown as a team... but not for long.

Sunny Coast Kwanna Island criterium  Diary Entry

Saturday afternoon saw Evan, Kyle and I entrust our bike bags to the luggage handlers at Jet star, who are renowned for their care when handling fragile items. After a short flight we arrived in Brisbane and headed off to get the hire car and more importantly, some food. This is where the weekend took its 1st bad turn. We had only just got to the baggage collect area when Evan says “I’ve forgot me laptop, it’s on the plane” Not being allowed back aboard the flight attendant went to look for it and somehow managed to look straight past it. We later located the pc once it arrived in cairns! Never the less we eventually got to our accommodation on the sunny coast and were happy to get some sleep. Thanks to Evans aunty and uncle for the beds for the night.

We woke Sunday morning to the noise of small dogs smashing their heads into a screen door, quite hard. We wasted no time getting ourselves to the place the crit was to be held, job well done to Evan on his navigation skills. Rain was falling lightly as we put the bikes together and started our warm up. The women’s race went without a drama and we were soon rolling around the course sizing it up. The rain with its impeccable timing started to come down fairly heavy and eventually all the riders were forced under cover. Things went downhill from there with the race officials deciding the risk to the riders was too great and cancelled the race!

Despite the riders having their say the decision had been made and the officials stuck to it. We were wet, cold and extremely annoyed to say the least. It was a long way to come to be wet and cold.

Another one of Evans aunts put us up for Sunday and Monday night so another big thank you there. We salvaged what we could from the day by a trip to DFO and a couple of bargains. Monday morning was a couple of hours in the saddle with a ride over Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious. A great coffee at a little place on top of Mt Glorious was worth a mention. We followed this up with a fast and furious trip visit to dream world. Up very early Tuesday morning to airport and a brief flight back to Mackay to reflect on the weekend. A disappointing weekend for racing was saved by some quick thrills and good coffee. Thanks also to Donna and Butsy for providing transport to and from the airport.
